Things You Should Watch

I watch quite a variety of television shows, movies, and documentaries on Netflix, so I thought I’d share some things I’ve seen recently that everyone with access should be watching.

House Of Cards

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve probably heard about the Netflix created show House of Cards. It is an incredibly well done show staring Kevin Spacey as the congressional majority whip who’s struggling to gain, or hold on to, power in Washington D.C. after the president he helped get elected snubs him for a cabinet position. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just dare you to try to only watch one episode in a sitting. As an aside Kate Mara continues her run of playing characters I love to hate, as a reporter struggling to be taken seriously at the Washington Herald. You may remember her as the creepy girlfriend from American Horror Story.

9.79 - ESPN Films - 30 for 30

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bad documentary from the producers of 30 for 30, but the most recent one that really blew me away was titled 9.79. It follows the competitors in the 8 men that took part in the 100m dash final at the Seoul Olympics in the years before the race and the fallout from Ben Johnson’s positive drug test afterward. I just started running track around the time of the 88 games, so the revelations in this documentary are amazing to me, but even if you’ve never run, nor been a fan of, track it’s shocking to see how far we’ve come in both drug testing and drug taking in professional sports. Like most of the older 30 for 30s you can watch it on Netflix.

Luther

I’m currently devouring Luther the intense BBC detective drama staring the insanely great Idris Elba (Stringer Bell). I seriously watched the whole first season this weekend and am enthralled with this dark series. It’s even better than the other BBC detective series Sherlock, that I’d also highly recommend, and that’s saying something. The show opens with Elba’s John Luther confronting a criminal about the whereabouts of a woman he’s abducted. What happens then sets up the foundation of the series with each episode interweaving “monster of the week” cases as well. The first series is only 6 episodes so make yourself some popcorn and plow through them. I swear you won’t want to stop until you’re through them all and series two, and then you’ll try to figure out a way to get the third series, which just recently finished filming.
